Community – More Than A Buzzword

April 28, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Our little home community, which continues to grow for some unexplained reason, shared in an important conversation about what it means to be an authentic follower of Jesus. During the course of the evening I observed that the depth of the conversation shared was always in direct proportion to each person’s feeling of belonging to the existing community.  It is good to see that more and more people are sharing at deeper levels; this deeper level of sharing allows each person to not only share interesting, and many times profound insights, but it also allows them to enjoy a therapeutic benefit from actually being able to say something that they feel deeply.

I am saddened that the word “community” has become a trendy buzzword in many realms within the Christian experience – the overuse of the word cheapens its depth of meaning.  True community is a wonder to behold, and even more wonderful to experience. This past week at the Cottage we had the privilege of experiencing the real thing –  a motley group of hopeful and hope-filled Jesus followers sharing life with one another as best as we knew how, loving every minute.

We had such a full weekend that I am utterly exhausted as I write this – so if any or all parts of this particular post are ill-written, please forgive me; I had better quit writing now and go to bed before I do any more damage to the post.
