Missional Expression

September 29, 2006 · Leave a Comment

I am really encouraged by the number of people I am meeting who are expressing a genuine interest in living missionally in wholly transformational way.  For the most part – people are getting it that doing church is not necessarily being church.  I am especially encouraged by those who share the conclusion that programming every blasted thing that you do in the name of Jesus is wearing exceedingly thin and superficial.

This past week in Michigan was a wonderful time meeting some excellent folks and learning from several great teachers as they shared their views on how best to define “the Gospel.”  Much more to say on this but now is the time for sleep, something that I have not gotten nearly enough of lately.

Michigan

Sitting in a motel room in Kalamazoo tonight.  Char had to take the train back this morning so she could make it to work  Monday.  In addition – she has about a dozen other things that she needs to get done before Wednesday when she leaves for Nantucket Island to be with Michael and Emily for a nice little vacation.  Had a great morning – I was invited to attend an AME church here in Kalamazoo by their pastor.  If you are sleepy when you go in, you will be wide awake when you come out! Great worship experience and the pastor had so many good things to say about commitment and solidarity to Jesus.  No mamby pamby stuff in that service today.  Shared breakfast with the pastor and her church – sadly, I had eaten before I came so I was only able to enjoy the generous supply of coffee.  Tomorrow morning I am off to meet with the pastor of Tapestry Church in Portage and then on to the Talking Points conference in Grand Rapids.  I am anxious to meet and learn from Scot McKnight and Ruth Tucker; I am also really looking forward to seeing Steve Argue as he has helped put the conference together so I know we will get at least a little time together.  Steve is such a great guy . . . one of the very dear and genuine articles.   Time to read and hit the sack.
